Sugar High?

I filled the hummingbird feeder with sugar water and hung it up a couple of days ago, probably a bit early, but I see there are already some Ontario sightings of Ruby Throated hummers according to the Hummingbird Migration Map (which suddenly isn't working properly, I don't know why). EDIT UPDATE: now it's working!

But guess who decided to take advantage of a free treat, yes, Billy the tree rat er.... cute fluffy squirrel. I think he's addicted to sugar, I'll have to send him to Sugarholics Anonymous. He deserves a bad tummy ache after draining the feeder dry.  I hope he doesn't tell all his friends. So far he's the only one showing up.

Did you know..... the term to describe the fear of squirrels is Sciurophobia.

  1. ...I need to get our hummingbird feeder out. They say that hummingbirds have returned.

  2. What an agile little thief. Part of me thinks he/she deserves that sugar high.

  4. In this case, "tree rat" is more than fair.

  5. Haha, I love the story of Billy the "tree rat" – sounds like he’s really living his best life with that sugar high! Hopefully, he won’t start a squirrel party and spread the word to all his friends. Sciurophobia is a funny term too; I’d imagine a lot of people might get it after dealing with a sugar-crazed squirrel like Billy. Keep an eye on that feeder, or Billy might just turn into a sugar addict.

  6. My feeder is washed and ready to go, but so far the map shows them in southern Ontario and not this far east. We have a lot of squirrels, both greys and the smaller 'red' squirrels, the latter being terrific jumpers. One of them has solved the pole feeder. I hang the hummer feeder from a long hook off the eaves of the house and I hope it is too far in for Mr Long Jump to reach, I hope. Hmm. It was a really mild day today and the violets and a few daffs are out. Feeder going up in the morning.
One year our first notice that the hummers had arrived was when one of them curvetted in and hung in front of JG's red hard hat. He was wearing it.

  9. How on earth do squirrels eat and drink while hanging upside down. Great photo of this pesky little fellow.

  12. Thanks for stopping by at Out of My Hat. It looks like we have been blogging for about the same amount of time.
I put my hummingbird feeders out yesterday (about a week or two late for Southern Missouri USA) and had a ruby red throat and emerald in just a few minutes.

  13. Squirrels are nothing if not opportunistic and a sweet treat seems to be right up their alley.

  14. Oh Billy, the sugar thief strikes again! 😂 I had to laugh at the idea of sending him to Sugarholics Anonymous—let’s hope he doesn’t spread the word or you'll have a squirrel rave in your backyard! It’s amazing how clever (and shameless) they can be when it comes to sweet treats. Fingers crossed the hummers get their turn soon—and thanks for the fun fact about Sciurophobia, I had no idea that was a thing!

  15. I’m not back to writing blogs yet. I just returned from that 3 week trip to Japan and have to go off on another trip to Chicago. I’ll be back in June. Hopefully.

That is the funniest thing, but I do remember how determined the squirrels were when we lived in Illinois.

  16. The squirrels I can tolerate, but hummingbirds stop feeding when wasps or ants arrive, and so that's a far graver matter.
