Plastic bags

We've all seen shredded plastic caught up in branches and we've all heard of the discarded plastic garbage patches in the ocean. There's a huge movement to get rid of single use plastic, and yet the grocery stores in my town still offer plastic bags, charging $0.05 each.

I always have half a dozen reuseable cloth bags in my car when I go shopping, but it surprises me how many people buy those plastic bags.

Last week, I went to two separate grocery stores, and on both occasions, the shopper in front of me at the checkout asked for 6 or more plastic bags. I was very tempted to ask why they needed the bags and what they were going to do with them once they had carried the groceries home.
But I didn't. I restrained myself.
When is it polite to mention plastic bags to a stranger?
Would you confront a shopper about plastic bags?
What's your opinion about this?

Earth (Half) Hour

The world switched off it's lights from 8:30pm to 9:30pm yesterday to conserve power and to celebrate Earth Hour.
Everyone except me.... I had Earth Half Hour.
I was out, left my living room and back porch light on, and didn't get home until 9pm.... OOPS!
Walking home, I passed windows flickering with candlelight. Street lights were still on in the name of safety, but many people observed the second annual Earth Hour by turning off all unnecessary lights and enjoying the peace and quiet.
We have to look after our beautiful planet.
Symbolic, but it's a start.

Earth Hour

By now, everyone's heard of Earth Hour, when tens hundreds of thousands of people around the world turned their lights off between 8pm and 9pm on Saturday evening, in an attempt to raise awareness of the world's dwindling energy resources, and the necessity to use energy wisely.

Toronto was one of the particpating cities. Click here to see a special Toronto Star report on the festivities.

More than 10,000 people listened to Nelly Furtado sing her heart out in the semi-darkness at a free outdoor concert in Nathan Phillips Square.

Me? I had been to a Scottish Country Dance workshop all day, dancing from 9am till 4:30pm. My feet were hurting. I didn't want to go anywhere.

I lit the candles and turned the lights out at 8pm. Outside, the houses across the road were dark. The Space Cadet claimed the sofa, and I settled into a comfy chair to enjoy the candlelight and the quiet.
I woke up at midnight.
Earth Hour was history..... and I slept right through it!
