Lifeboats - in addition to the previous post

Lorenzo reminded me about the Penlee Lifeboat disaster off the coast of Cornwall in 1981 in gale force conditions. 16 lives were lost, 8 from the coaster Union Star, and all 8 crew members of the Penlee Lifeboat, Solomon Browne. You can read the details of what happened here.

There's still a Penlee Lifeboat ready to brave the high seas at a moments notice. The crew are a fun-loving bunch, as you can see from this video. This just proves how courageous these chaps really are!
(Sorry I don't know how to bring a video into my blog, I've tried, but I'm doing something wrong.)

  3. Dennis thanks you for this story. It's a rainy day and good one for a history buff like Dennis to just relax and read.

  4. The RNLI has been important to us when we were island dwellers and we always suppoeted them. We even have a cat called RiNLI because his purr sounds like the local lifeboat.
Incidentally, my name is actually Welsh.

  6. Shammie: There is only one answer to your video-on-your-blog-dilemma: get a teenager, who embeds in a second it in in a blur of flying fingers.

Congrats on your award (from Kostas, above)!

  12. These posts have been so interesting and educational. I knew blogging was more than just entertainment.

Yes, we have rattlesnakes in Florida and water moccasins, coral snakes, and copperheads. A lot of our "wild" country has been developed. A few years ago, in a new development, a toddler was bitten by a rattlesnake in his back yard. Poor baby didn't survivie. I live near town, in a regular neighborhood, and there is often wildlife around...raccoons, possums, owls, and, snakes. I had a large black snake on my front porch one day. I didn't bother him, but this baby rattler had to go. I hope he was lost and that his mother is nowhere around.
