On The Shelf

I love poking around in thrift and second hand stores and I picked up this funny little shelf in a used furniture shop for about $12 a couple of weeks ago. It looked like it had potential but it was in rough shape with layers of drippy brown paint and a few dings and scratches.

I ended up spending more than twice that amount in paint stripper, sandpaper, stain and varathane finish, but I think it was worth it.

Now it's home to the caribou carvings from Labrador (click here to read their story). The smooth beach pebbles are from Middle Cove Beach in Newfoundland and the rock is citrine... my birthstone.

  2. Looks nice - may originally been intended to take a scented candle light, or, even a clock - but you've certainly put it to good use!

  3. I can't agree with John - I reckon it was always intended that one day that little shelf would be home to your carabu

  5. A decorative little thing :) And you did a fine work with it.
I found out because of your post that my birthstone is a smokey quartz :) It suits very well to me. I have even been on Cairngorms in Scotland, where these stones can be found.
    Blogging is educational ;)
My older daughter with her two children left us yesterday and I will go to see Melli and Mikael on Sunday, the life is rich, isn`t it!
    Happy weekend to you!

  10. Congratulation – both on being a grandma again and for the lovely quilts. I love quilts and wish I knew how to make them - yours are so pretty. I knit or crochet baby blankets. The small shelf is good looking and your little treasures look great on it. You certainly are a creative lady.
