This Week

Well, I'm sad to report that my region is back into Covid lockdown as of Monday morning. All non-essential stores have to close but can offer curb pick up or delivery. Restaurants and coffee shops too, and gyms, hairdressers, museums, theatre, everything that we all used to consider part of normal life. But the big stores like Walmart and Costco can still open, because they sell food, but can also sell everything else, while the family owned shops have to close. It's not right!

I cut the Christmas cake I made into quarters, and covered each one with almond paste, or marzipan. There should be a layer of royal icing on top, but that's even more sugar which is just too much. Family will be getting some of these.

We had an overnight snowfall a few days ago, and the trees looked very pretty for a while, until the temperature rose and all the snow melted. You can see where the treerats have knocked the snow down along the squirrel highway.
Last year at this time I took part in an ATC trading event.... ATC = Artist Trading Cards 2.5"x3.5"..... I wrote about it here and showed pictures of the cards here. We met at a local Art Gallery for the afternoon, it was a bit crazy with everyone exchanging cards and trying to add the best cards to their collections, but so much fun.
Of course, 2020 and Mr Covid has put a stop to any in person events, so one of the artists organized a physically distanced remote ATC exchange . 18 people agreed to make cards, and we dropped them off at her house, along with a small donation to the local food bank. She sorted them, and made sure everyone got at least one card from each artist.

Here are a selection of the cards that I received, already filed into their plastic storage pages. Little tiny works of art.  This was such a welcome creative distraction in an otherwise gloomy time. I hope that by next year we can do this in person.

  1. I do like artist trading cards. They're a pure form, just made to give and receive, no selling. I organized a huge exhibit of them some years ago in a local gallery, with friends from all over the world sending me sheets of atcs. That was a challenge to exhibit! but it was well received.

Some quilters, seeing that the nine part sheets for the atcs were like nine patch quilts, joined in on that account, some making fabric atcs, others drawings and paintings. It was great fun.

  2. It really is a travesty that small business are being driven to bankruptcy when large chains (and neither Walmart nor Costco are even Canadian) are able to continue to do business.

    1. It would be so easy for our local Walmart to rope off the grocery area, and deny customer access to the other parts of the store but it hasn't happened.

  3. Sadly the same big business/small business travesty has happened here as well. Supported by our Government.
I hope your lockdown can be eased quickly.
Love those cards. Miniature artistry indeed - and hope that you CAN do the event in person next year.
Marzipan? I really like it. Others do not. My cakes will go out unadorned. Sigh.

    1. The current lockdown is scheduled to end on January 10. I suppose it remains to be seen what the infection rate will be after everyone gets together for Christmas dinners.
Yes, the ATCs are super little works of art.

  4. It's too bad the big companies can't be monitored and just sell food. Over here, the big companies had to block off their isles so people couldn't buy anything except food and other essentials. Small businesses complained and that's when they were told to block the sections off. They did and that was the end of it.
    Enjoy your day.

  5. I so hope next Christmas will be different! The lockdowns are so tough now.

The card exchange was a great idea.

  6. What amazing and beautiful art work. Little treasures to brighten your day.
This lockdown business is so difficult and sad. I pray we can come out of it very soon. I hate what it is doing to small, local businesses. I really don't see how they will recover. So many have already gone under.
    Here's hoping for a better 2021.

    1. Vaccine is on its way. We have started the first vaccinations here in Canada. Not sure when it will be my turn though. Lots of people need it more than me.

  8. Autumn-like warm December turned to midwinter suddenly this week…., brrrr…., but no prospect of dusting of snow here in Nara. First snow is always exciting. The COVID cases is increasing in my country, too. But with only requests, without legal authority, flattening the curve depends on people’s mindset and attitude. To stay indoors and to be engaged in something you like is not bad during cold days. Card exchange is a nice idea. The cards you received made up a nice mosaic in the plastic storage bag. Stay safe and warm.

  9. You're right. It is not fair. The big stores should at least have to close down their non-food selections. Not that that would help the small stores. Such a dilemma.

    1. Even bigger lockdown starting on Boxing Day. Will Walmart rope off the non-food section. I don't think so.

  10. This pandemic is certainly making us think a little harder about how we can get things done Shammi, so glad you were able to keep the card exchange going. Hopefully the vaccine will be a success and we can get on with life ✨

  12. I've not heard of ATCs before. What a great idea, they are so cute.

  13. Lovely trading cards. The big stores are safer than the small shops unfortunately. More space and higher ceilings. My son-in-law works in Costco and that apparently is the rationale. No nefarious plots.

  14. Lovely mini pieces of art.

Here in the South East of England we have gone into a full lockdown again. Also because are stupid Prime Minister announced that we have a new strain of Covid that is 70% more infectious than the original virus now no other country will allow us into their country. Lorries carrying food cannot enter or leave the UK causing people to panic buy and no doubt a shortage of food to follow.

    1. Yes I read about the new Covid strain and all the travel restrictions and the food worries. Our infection rate is going up fast and we are headed for an even tighter lock down for 28 days starting Boxing Day.
