Finished?

I haven't painted anything for ages.... pandemic pause. This was a 16"x20" canvas with a failed rubbish painting from 4 or 5 years ago, so a couple of coats of gesso covered the horrible mess, and I started painting, no actual intention in mind.

I think it's finished. Possibly. I don't know. Is it?   .....   Update: I changed the sky colour to a shade of purple, made a few adjustments, and I sold it.

  1. I really like seeing the painting emerge. It is perhaps just me but in the final image I see tulips, leaves, a bird and a snail. And like it a lot.

    1. Thanks for the compliment, Bill. I'm trying to be more loose and expressive with painting, too easy to get bogged down in details.

    1. I still haven't decided if they really are tulips. Or some imagined blossom in the jungle.

  6. Interesting development. I actually thought the first step was appealing and didn’t realize that you were about to go on.

    1. I didn't know where the painting was going either. Just paint and decide later!

  8. Learning when a painting is finished is an art in itself. I really like it.

    1. Thank you, I'm glad you like it. Always hard to say it's finished as just a few more strokes with the brush might make it fabulous, or might ruin it altogether!

  9. Fascinating to see how the this painting has evolved. What more could you possibly do to it?

  10. I was surprised to see the process. I like the result, but I wonder if it still changes. So interesting that you painted rather unconscious leaving your brush move free.

  11. Love the series and really like the final version. Is it finished? Paintings, poems and love affairs are never finished, merely abandoned.
