Da Classic Scoop

This old clapboard General Store has been in business since before 1875, but it's sitting on property that's needed for road widening. This town's getting bigger. Lot's of debate going on... move it further back on the property, or bring in the bulldozers?

Back in the 1930's and 40's it was used as a Post Office. Currently it's the home of Da Classic Scoop, a funky diner, serving breakfasts and lunches, and icecream in the summer. Inside, the walls are covered with old time memorabilia... record sleeves, licence plates, movie posters, other people's junk that the current owner has turned into treasure.

It would be a shame to see this local landmark disappear, but like so many growing towns, space is needed for "improvements". Even though the Heritage Advisory Committee is advocating moving the building, the ole gal will probably be gone by the summer. Saving old buildings just because they are old isn't high on the town's financial priority list, unless there is unique architectural value.

So, in order say goodbye to Da Classic Scoop in grand style, the Red Hat Ladies got all spiffed up in our going-out-to-lunch outfits, and did just that!

Fifteen women sang, laughed, lunched, told stories, and laughed some more. I don't think that Da Classic Scoop people knew what hit them!

  1. Wow, that must have been a fun time! Very cool. :)

I sure hope that they find a way to move the building rather than destroy it. It hurts to see history overlooked for convenience.

    Please keep us posted. :)

  3. This is truth, simple but beautiful and essential element of feminine beauty and culture via the centuries.
All the ladies in marvellous collage are... dolls!

  4. It's such a pity when a building like that gets "lost" in the finacial priority list, but I'm glad that you all had a wonderful "goodbye" time there.

You can't keep every building just because it's old. Look at the picture. It's an plain, unremarkable building. 50 years ago no one would have worried about knocking it down, so why worry about it now. Save your fight for a more worthy building.

  10. It would be a pity indeed to lose the old building, but we can't stand in the way of progress, can we. (Said with much sarcasm.)

  11. I suppose I would have mixed feelings about those changes as well.

This is the first time I heard about the Red Hat Society. Neat!

  13. Those Red Hat ladies know how to put on a show...especoally when there's a need for a one! Sadly, we see stuff like this happening all the time in Atlanta as roads get widened. We call this progress?

  14. I hate seeing the small town feeling getting lost for progress. Glad the red hats could celebrate at Da Scoop.

  16. HAHAHA! Attack of the Red Hat Ladies!!

To respond to your question, I took the macro shot of the daffodils and hyacinth standing on my toes because they were growing on top of a huge 6' urn in the park.

But I have been known to get on all fours, on the group to take a photo. Not a pleasant sight for pedestrians. :-)

  17. Well,it seems a shame that that place might be bulldozed....So much history there and it has had quite a metamorphasus....!
You all look adorable in your Red & Purple!

  18. SAVE DA CLASSIC SCOOP! That place looks awesome, what a shame. There's so few one-off stores/pubs/coffee shops these days, I hope the Red Hat ladies can rally for it being moved rather than torn down...As the lady who took the pics is in Argentina right now, I don't know what the plan is yet...I DO know, if they get sold, we make more ££. I don't really have the rights to put them on the net...(but surely my personal blog doesn't count? :-)

  19. My wife is a Red Hat also.

It may be too late to save the building before it became public knowledge about any plans. It seems that most city councils have sold out to developers who dont care about history, they only care about the bottom line. we have the same thing here, the town even want to sell parkland to developers.

  21. You're still doing road widening?

The red hat with the purple reminds me of that poem. Anyone know it?
