Who was it? Visiting Royalty? The Prime Minister? Paris Hilton? No, someone far more important. The children of the Stouffville Christian School had prepared a very special welcome banner.
You noticed the Olympic Rings? Our Celebrity is Karen Cockburn, 2008 Silver Medallist in Women's Trampoline in Beijing.
Karen lives right here, in our small town. The Mayor declared September 13th as "Karen Cockburn Day".
Karen and her husband Mathieu Turgeon are both Olympic Medallists in Trampoline. Karen won Bronze in 2000, and Silver in both 2004 and 2008, and she has plans to compete in 2012 in London. Matt won Bronze in 2000.Karen was presented with awards from our Mayor, and from both levels of Govenment, Provincial and Federal.
Karen and Matt spent some time signing autographs for a huge crowd of fans, here signing a Certificate for Lui Temelkovski, Member of Parliament.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your outstanding athlete, and her hometown! It looks like fine weather for a parade. We had a parade scheduled for our town this weekend, but it was rained out.
It's not that we're afraid of getting wet, it's that the water level rose to a 50-year high yesterday. The Chicago neighborhood that I used to live in was evacuated for flooding in the morning.
Today the sun is working it's way back, and I wouldn't mind a parade, but we don't have any Olympians 'round here that I know of.

That is truly nice. I'm a huge fan of the Olympics. When the politicians keep their big noses out of it - which is rarely - it is a wonderful example of how we might all live together and enjoy each other.
ReplyDeleteI missed the parade. She has also won medals at the last three Olympic Games which is quite a feat and she also had the honour of carrying the Canadian flag at the closing ceremonies.

ReplyDeleteThere are sports that you "forget" between the Olympic games! This may be one! Nice that there is a chance for promotion, at least every four years!
ReplyDeleteShe had better watch out at London 2012. There will be a llama competing on the trampoline and llamas spit, bite and kick if they get beaten in sport.

ReplyDeleteI didn't realize you were from Stouffville. We lived there for several years, after being in Toronto. But how great that they have a Christian School and they led the parade. I was also a Christian School teacher before I retired, (from being a teacher, not from being a Christian!)Congratulations to Karen Cockburn of Stouffville!
