Silver Medal

There was a noisy parade along Main Street to honour a Very Important Celebrity this weekend. Important enough to be led by the Fire Trucks with their lights flashing and the sirens wailing, and followed by a posse of police cars.

Who was it? Visiting Royalty? The Prime Minister? Paris Hilton? No, someone far more important. The children of the Stouffville Christian School had prepared a very special welcome banner.

You noticed the Olympic Rings? Our Celebrity is Karen Cockburn, 2008 Silver Medallist in Women's Trampoline in Beijing.

Karen lives right here, in our small town. The Mayor declared September 13th as "Karen Cockburn Day".

Karen and her husband Mathieu Turgeon are both Olympic Medallists in Trampoline. Karen won Bronze in 2000, and Silver in both 2004 and 2008, and she has plans to compete in 2012 in London. Matt won Bronze in 2000.
Karen was presented with awards from our Mayor, and from both levels of Govenment, Provincial and Federal.

Karen and Matt spent some time signing autographs for a huge crowd of fans, here signing a Certificate for Lui Temelkovski, Member of Parliament.

Way to go, Karen, Congratulations!
And way to go Stouffville, for putting on a party to honour our own Olympic Champion!

She's cute!

She has such a youthful, pretty face. To add to the cute factor, the Olympic Rings behind her head makes her look like one of Disney's Mouseketeers.

Congratulations to your outstanding athlete, and her hometown! It looks like fine weather for a parade. We had a parade scheduled for our town this weekend, but it was rained out.

It's not that we're afraid of getting wet, it's that the water level rose to a 50-year high yesterday. The Chicago neighborhood that I used to live in was evacuated for flooding in the morning.

Today the sun is working it's way back, and I wouldn't mind a parade, but we don't have any Olympians 'round here that I know of.

It's nice when a hometown gal or guy does good. Your town really knows how to roll out the red carpet!

Now that's really neat! It's great that the town supported them like that too.

That is truly nice. I'm a huge fan of the Olympics. When the politicians keep their big noses out of it - which is rarely - it is a wonderful example of how we might all live together and enjoy each other.

I missed the parade. She has also won medals at the last three Olympic Games which is quite a feat and she also had the honour of carrying the Canadian flag at the closing ceremonies.

There are sports that you "forget" between the Olympic games! This may be one! Nice that there is a chance for promotion, at least every four years!

She had better watch out at London 2012. There will be a llama competing on the trampoline and llamas spit, bite and kick if they get beaten in sport.

How neat to have an Olympian from your town! And very nice to have a parade for her!!

Good for them, they so deserve the recognition!

Are you coming to London in 2012?

That is so neat of her town to do that!

I didn't realize you were from Stouffville. We lived there for several years, after being in Toronto. But how great that they have a Christian School and they led the parade. I was also a Christian School teacher before I retired, (from being a teacher, not from being a Christian!)Congratulations to Karen Cockburn of Stouffville!

Wait....there's an Olympic event for trampoline?
