O No! Canada (and update)

There's a nasty rumour that the powers that be here in Canada are proposing to change the words of our national Anthem.
Apparently, some female Canadians object to the phrase "in all thy sons command".
In that case, perhaps the phrase "our home and native land" should be the next target of the revisionists?
What a load of codswallop.
Well, I'm not anyone's son (I'm a daughter), and this is not my native land (I was born in the UK), and singing those non-PC words don't worry me a tiny bit. I've been belting out O Canada for the last thirty years with no problems.

Don't the pollies in Ottawa have anything better to do to earn their outrageous salaries?

O CANADA update: Saturday March 6 2010
After a loud public outcry, the pollies have decided not to change anything. They are actually going to listen to Canadians for a change..... what a concept! If only they could manage to make all their important decisions in just two days.

  1. I'm with you on this one, Shammy! It's totally ridiculous, silly, dumb...

I can't help but think someone is trying to make us concentrate on this rather than on anything else that might actually be important. Yes, I am such a cynic. ;-)

  2. Politics sure gets in the way of common sense. We have the same kinds of "dumb" decisions in the US too. It gives me a headache thinking about it.
I hope your people wise up and leave well enough alone.

  3. I am so sick and tired of every pissant on the planet thinking that everything has to be made inclusive and non-gender, non-age, non-skintone, non-intelligence specific. Your anthem is - dare I say it? - probably my favorite. Anybody who screws with it will have to answer to this American!!!

  4. "Oh no" is right. When I taught missionary kids down in Haiti, I had students from the States and Canada and a few more countries. We sang both anthems often. I came to love your anthem as I do my own.

  7. i've always suspected Canada is better than the UK in many respects - feeling public opinion makes some difference, that must mean something, right?
