Earthquake Alert!

Sitting in front of my computer at about 1:45pm today, the walls started to sway and creak and the venetian blinds started flapping, only a few seconds and it was over, with more creaks and groans from the walls of the 110 year old house a few minutes later. People out in the street didn't seem to notice and just carried on with what they were doing.

But OlderSon felt it too, about 4okm away. Weird feeling! Made me want to run outside. But earthquakes just don't happen here in S Ontario.... or do they????

The Globe and Mail says it was 5.0 on the Richter scale. Here.

  1. I felt it too. I was on the sofa enjoying an ice cream, and felt the sofa moving. The ice cream was good but not that good!
We felt one a few years ago here, we were in the basement, and it felt like the floor was grinding under our feet. Hubby called the local news and was the first person to call in. They sent a camera crew to the house and he was on the news. That was his 15 minutes of fame.
Those that KNOW say that this one measured 5.5, and the epicentre was North of Ottawa.

  2. I've never felt an earthquake before, but I slept through one in Tokyo. That was late summer of 2005.

  4. Supposedly, we got some of that in New England, but I didn't feel a thing. Possible tornado this afternoon, another thing we NEVER get around here. I'm thinking the apocalypse may be imminent. If so, I need to start reading the Bible and looking for loopholes.

  5. I felt too, I actually was in front of my desk, and the minute I saw the computer swaying strange, I left the room and walked over to my 2 year old son sleeping. I recognized it from few years ago, so I knew the ground was shaking. My boy was practically shaking in the bed, but sleeping. It was definitely unforgettable and strange feeling. Anna :)

  7. I heard last night on the news that the tremors from your earthquake could be felt as far South as Michigan, and even Chicago (near me). The only tremors I felt though, was when we shifted positions on the couch while watching a family movie.

  8. That's a pretty good shaker. Until 3 years ago I have always lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and have felt my share of the quakes. So happy to now be out of that zone, but of course the odd one can happen anywhere, even in your neck of the woods.
Glad there was no damage except for some rattled nerves.

  10. I felt it too. I was sitting on hubby's hospital bed and felt it shake. I thought at first that hubby was kicking the bed, but then a picture fell off the T.V. It was weird. Then the nurses started laughing and somebody said "earthquake". I didn't believe it at first, since it was not very strong and did not last long.

  11. I've been aware of three earthquakes in southern Ontario. The first was about 25 years ago and I was in a car on the highway so I didn't feel a thing.

The second was a few years after that. I thought I heard a car pull into the garage and shudder to a stop. That's how subtle it was.

This one, I was out on the boat fishing. I never felt a thing but Frank said he felt something unusual and thought his line had tangled in the weed bed or something.
