On The Table #3

Well.... not really on the table, more like on the kitchen counter.
It's marmalade making time again.

This batch was made from 12 11-1/2 Seville oranges (one was squishy at one end), 4 lemons, water and 3.5 kg of sugar.
The bitter Seville oranges are only available at the end of January into February, and are the traditional ingredients for marmalade. I can't stand the very sweet sickly stuff that passes for marmalade in N American grocery stores. I like my marmalade to have a kick to it!

So you know what I'll be spreading on my toast in the morning.

  1. As a kid, I didn't care for marmalade made from Seville oranges but I suspect I'd feel otherwise now. Colourful photo!

    The last time I tried marmalade I was a kid and didn't like it much. I should try it again, though I suspect I'd prefer the sweeter kind. However, I won't know till I give it a taste!

  3. Ooo that looks so good. Lots of work but definitely worth it. I think the slightly bitter taste would really enhance the spread on toast. Makes me hungry just looking at it.

    Thanks for stopping by! ... I do love Seville oranges. My dad loved them too (being from the UK), so I grew up with that.
    My Singer is from about 1980, and doesn't free motion all that well but not too bad! The book helped alot.

  6. I remember from my first to Sevilla visit that I tasted an orange from one of the trees on the street ... and was of course - negatively - surprised about how bitter it was! It looked so tasty! Definitely better for marmelades! :-)

  7. Absolutely. Marmalade should not be as sweet as jam. It should put a smile on the face of a grown-up and make (some) children scowl.

  8. That's a lot of marmalade for only 11-1/2 oranges, Sham! WOW. I absolutely LOVE orange marmalade but have forgotten all about it till you mentioned it. I'd like the kick, too. Please save a bottle for me. :)
