Pancake Day

Did you have pancakes yesterday? If you didn't, you should have! But it's never too late for pancakes, enjoy some today!

Today is Ash Wednesday, the day that Lent begins in the Christian calendar, which means that yesterday was Pancake Day...or to use it's rightful name, Shrove Tuesday.

Lent is a Christian holiday that was established in the 4th century as lasting 40 days and leading up to Easter. It's traditionally a period of fasting or other forms of self-denial. Fats, which were generally prohibited during Lent, had to be used up. The eggs and dairy products left in the pantry would be used to make pancakes.

So, do you like the North American version, a pile of thick pancakes served with butter and maple syrup, and a slice or two of bacon....

Or do you prefer the English version... thin like crepes, and rolled up with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of sugar.... ?

Pancake photos borrowed from the internet.

  1. I'd prefer both. They look so good in your pictures! Guess I'd better stick with my oatmeal.

  2. Now that's just not fair. My tummy is growling and what do I see? Yummy pancakes and crepes. Oh how I love them both, especially with lots of butter and syrup. Not really on my diet though so I guess I will have a salad instead. Phoohy,,,

  6. I would perhaps prefer the American version (without the bacon), would also like the English version and would perhaps end up with a "crêpe flambée"!

In the meantime, I had a few with whipped cream and blueberry jam!

  8. Swedish pancakes, French crepes...definitely my choice. I can eat them daily. But i don't. Not just because it's lent. I eat the other ones occasionally, maybe twice a year but usually only because a host has made them and I'm being polite. I don't dislike them, but they aren't my favorite. Blueberry pancakes are much more tolerable than plain. Waffles I like even less.

  9. I have never heard of giving up "fat" for Lent before. :-)

When I lived in Louisiana, we usually give up alcohol for Lent. And that is preceded by lots of drunken debaucheries during Mardi Gras -- the week leading up to Ash Wednesday. :-)

You know....so we have something REAL to repent for.
