Go South .... or Go Get the Snow Shovel

It's been a wild weekend.
The snow started falling on Friday afternoon and didn't let up until sometime during Saturday night. This picture doesn't do justice to the sight of horizontal white-out snow whipping past the window. One look outside convinced me that I wasn't going anywhere.

As I was stuck indoors all day on Saturday, I felt an irresistible bout of Martha-style Domestic Goddess coming on. This often happens if I can't go out anywhere..... it's the perfect antidote to Cabin Fever.

So I finished knitting this "green" string bag, perfect for those last minute trips to the supermarket. My tiny contribution to the battle against plastic bags and global warming.... but please notice not much is being said about the afore mentioned global warming during our snowier than usual winter. Knitting pattern here. Thank you Lettuce.

And then... I decided that Chelsea Buns were just the ticket on a snowy day, but I cheated a bit by making the dough in the bread machine. I didn't have any raisins, and I certainly wasn't going shopping in a blizzard, so I added currants, dried cranberries and grated apple. Delectable.

The Space Cadet didn't waste much time before getting a product sample.

Sunday morning I could hardly get the back door open, the drifts were so high.

We shovelled our way to the sidewalk, where Mr Nice Nextdoor Neighbour was already out with his snowblower. We have a great arrangement.... MR NNN has the snowblower, and The Space Cadet has the key to Mr NNN's garage!

After digging our way out, we were volunteers at the local Junior 'A' hockey game, taking admission and selling teeshirts and hats.

I didn't stay to watch the game, but I think the home team lost.

  3. oh, more snow up there. that must be why it's been so COLD down here the past two days. not so cold that we could not have what some people claim was the beginnings of a funnel cloud, high wind, and hail over starbucks in dupont circle. there are strange things going on here.

baby mary ellen is now 28,985 days old!!!

  4. How disheartening to have MORE snow! It'll melt, finishing the string bag and sweet rolls was the perfect way to chase the end-of-winter blues.

  5. Wonderful photos, ex-S. And those Chelsea Buns have me drooling. We got smucked pretty hard too.. without the benefit of a kindly neighbour with a snow blower. I would have welcomed one of those buns after all that shoveling (and before and during.

  6. Despite (or thanks to) the snow storm you seem to have spent your Sunday in an excellent way!

  7. It wasn't so much the amount of snow that fell as that darn wind. My neighbour didn't need to use a snowblower -- much of his snow blew into our driveway!

Well, it wasn't his fault so I won't hold it against him. ;-)

  11. That was some snow storm. My goodness, I can understand why things come to a halt. Your "Martha" projects look terrific. I think if I was snowed in I would be nine feet wide myself, baking all those yummy comfort foods...the buns look absolutely delish.

  13. Tessa may be pretty but you are prettier to me.

Hey, Mr Nice Neighbor took my job of snowblowing. Give him a kiss for me.

Thanks for the knitting pattern. I had just looked at a knitted tote like that and wanted the pattern. Did you read my mind?

  16. Believe it or not, Ex-S, we had a flurry of snowflakes on Saturday the 8th in Atlanta. Maybe they were on their way north to you! Nothing stuck to the ground but it was wonderful to see for those of us who don't get the snow like you do. I know you're tired of it by now but it's still a sight for sore eyes for me.

  19. Call me the next time your Martha Domestic Goddess comes on - I swear I can smell those cinnamon rolls. And I'm going to try to make that string bag though I'm not much of a knitter. You and Rosemary have the snow market cornered.

  21. um. don't go to my blog if you wanna see sunny warm weekend pictures. i think next February you really ought to consider a holiday to SF. ;)
I love your market bag! I hate plastic grocery bags, i hate paper grocery bags. i hate when i forget my market bags and have to use the other ones.
3 of the neighbors at the hideaway pitched in on a snow blower. The blower is stored in our garage. How convenient for us, that the neighbors have to blow our driveway to get the plow out. :)
