Hot Cross Buns

Hot cross buns,
Hot cross buns,
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot Cross Buns.
If you have no daughters,
Give them to your sons,
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot Cross Buns

When I was little, the only day that Hot Cross Buns were available was Good Friday, the Friday before Easter. You had to get to the bakery early to make sure you got there before these traditional buns were all gone, because there wouldn't be any more until next year.

Sliced in half, toasted, spread with a little butter..... a real treat.
Did you enjoy some Hot Cross Buns on Good Friday? I did.

  3. I have to admit that we can get these all year round now... and I get them now and then.. I like them toasted with jam/jelly in the morning with a cup of tea for my breakfast.

  8. I love those! We have a bread here that reminds me of hot cross buns. I don't know what it is we just call it "Jewish Bread" because the Jewish people love it. It's soft and almost sweet and really, really good!

Did you make them, or did you purchase them from your friendly baker?

  11. Happy Easter! Yes, we had Hot Cross Buns breakfast on Good Friday. They are available all the time, it seems, but I'm a purist and I only have them on Good Friday. That makes it really special.

  15. I had crepes this year, one year I made up some Ukrainian Easter bread, very good too.
Thanks for the memories though, beside the Hot X buns for breakfast we invariably had poached smoke haddock with egg sauce for evening meal.
We were not catholic but Good Friday was the only meat free day of the year for us, I managed to go meat free this year too, just because.

  16. Hello great grandmother :)
And thanks for greetings, Kiki thanks too.
Baby Melissa wants to send special greetings to Callum and say, that eating and sleeping is best in his age.
Melissa can already for instance throw away plates and cups from the table and find electric lines behind TV and so on, but she is 7 months, it is a long journey from your age Callum.

    Take care!
    With love Melissa
