Markham Fair - Part 3

As with all rural Ontario Fall Fairs, there's the Handicrafts section. This includes painting, knitting, crochet, dressmaking, stained glass, woodcarving, cake decorating.... well, whatever your talent is, there's a class for you to enter.

I made my way straight to the quilt display.

This Champion Quilt was hand stitched..... each scrap of colour is a separate fabric.

.... and this one... well! It knocked me speechless. Grand Champion Quilt of the Fair. Semi-circular bottom end, corners the top end, machine stitched, I love the colours!

I have a quilt half finished... it's been that way for the past five years. Better get on with it ready for the 2008 Fair.
Scroll down to see Markham Fair - Part 2, the veggie display, and Part 1, the farm animals.

  1. The colors of the circular quilt are so vivid. I can see why it won all the awards.
I think we all have half done projects hiding in our closets and drawers. I have so many good intentions. Hope you finish your quilt, of course it will have to be after the wedding...

  2. now you're talkin' my language! :) although i don't quilt (yet), can only knit scarves, haven't crocheted since i was 8, can't sew (yet), have done any stained glass (yet), only did a bit of woodcarving in grade school and haven't learned the art of cake decorating (altho i have about 10 of those fancy tips). Ahhh...so many dreams but not enough time. I suppose that's why it's so easy to admire those who specialize in their arts and crafts, yes?

  3. I have done a little bit of sewing, tried quilting and like yours it is still waiting to be picked up again. I do knit though.
Also like you that Quilt just blew me away, machine stiched or not the artwork and skill are there for all to see. Beautiful.

  4. It brings back a lot of memories when my mom used to spend months cutting quilt pieces and sewing them together in squares and then using them to make quilts. After she passed on, we found many trash bags filled with quilt pieces dating back to World War II. The fabric was rotten and could not be used.

  5. That is so inspirational! I make quilts, but I haven't made one in years (too busy ya know). I've always wanted to make one like those.

  6. I wanted to make a light self-deprecating joke about talent, but that quilt with the circular star bursts has me speechless!! The boldness of the color and patterns really has a way of popping out.

As always, I enjoyed the pics.

  8. What gorgeous quilts! Do you make them Shammy?

Agree about the C'tn drinking! When we were coming back from the Azores the three men used to argue about the time the sun went over the yardarm! They actually got it to midday once! At least in Turkey we waited until happy hour!

    Lorenzo.

  10. Thanks for taking me to the Markham Fair with you. I loved it all, the animals, the veggies (what a big potato) and the quilts. I made a patchwork quilt years ago (I'm very proud of that) and I love buying them, especially the handmade ones.

  13. I like the first one best -- it's more....errr....manly, although I can't think of another instance when the words quilt and manly were used in the same sentence.

HAHAHA! I actually have two quilts. One was a beautiful french style design machine made quilt I bought in Paris. The second was a hand made quilt from my aunt in NC.
