Shoe Tree

I don't know how long this ancient willow has been decorated with discarded footwear, or who nailed the first shoe onto the trunk.
But not only shoes.
Boots, runners, flip-flops.
Typical of Canada, halfway up, there's even a pair of rusty hockey skates.

But the obvious question remains..... WHY?

  3. Yeah, what's with the shoes on the tree?

I love my shoes too much to do that to them.

  4. Are they all in pairs? Maybe someone found one lost shoe and put it on the tree and it grew from there. Or maybe it is what you titled the post....A Shoe Tree. A rubber Tree.....A Sad Sole Tree.....A Bootertree...Maybe the old woman who loved in a shoe started there.

  5. that's so funny about the hockey skates! I don't know why it's done, but there's a tree near our hideaway that has them all over the limbs too, like lilli's. Curious.

btw, i think it would be perfectly fine for you to Play It Forward with me!! If you're gone a month, you'll still have over a month to get and send out goodies, it's just by the end of the year and in fact you could modify the rules on your end and say by January __!! So just email me your address and I'll find/make the perfect gift for ya: madeline@retzlaff.com!

  7. Is this a new fashion, like the shoes you can now find at a lot of places, hanging on telephone or electric cables? (This used to have a signification of drugs sales, but obviously not any more and most certainly not in this "tree case".)

  8. Ho sad for this tree. Wouldn't it be kinder to that great living thing for those trees to be laid at it's base, offering tribute?

  10. I like the idea! A "leave your footmark/print here" tree, perhaps?

  12. Son: Dad, where shall I put this?
Father: Set it down right there, near the foot of that tree.

I have heard that putting a nail in a tree does not hurt it. It's like a mosquito bite. Next time I have a conversation with a tree, I'll have to ask and see if it's true.

  14. How funny is this?? I read this post either Wednesday or Thursday and thought it was pretty amusing.... I then went for a local walk with my husband Sunday morning and came face to face with a large old dead tree with scores of old shoes (in pairs), laced together and strung all over the branches! I felt a definite sense of deja vu!!

  17. That's hysterical. And not a bad idea for getting rid of old stuff. I hope the tree doesn't mind!
