A Touch of Royalty

Last week some very good friends of mine were invited to speak at a local church lunch. My friends are staunch Royalists and are enthusiastic members of the Monarchist League of Canada. Over they years, they have amassed a truly enormous collection of all things Royal, in fact so much that they almost need to build an extension on the house to store it all! Their topic was "Royal Weddings", perfect timing to coincide with the recent wedding of Princess Eugenie. They set up a display table that included photos, letters, books, commemorative mugs and plates, colouring books, Tshirts, you name it.... it was there. And this is just a tiny portion of their collection.

I'm afraid that's as close as I'll ever get to a real Royal Wedding. However, my maternal ancestors hail from the same town in England and with the same last name as some ancestors of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, the wife of Prince William..... so I may be related..... very very distantly! I wasn't invited to that wedding either.

  1. Oh my word, I'm the opposite of a Royalist, but each to their own of course. I bet that all that stuff would sell well on ebay. :D

  2. I am not a Royalist either. The sooner we become a republic the better. I don't envy them their jobs though.

  3. I don't mind the royals. If people want to have them, it's up to them.

  5. They're quite serious! I think the royals provide a certain kind of continuity that's needed.

  6. That's quite a collection your friend has there Shammi. I must admit I am a fan of the Royal family, they work harder than people think..but not to the point of having a collection 😀

  7. That is, indeed, quite a collection of items, and you say there are even more. My genealogy revealed British ancestors. Also have family reports that a couple Royalist brothers separated from their other two to go to Canada rather than fight for our country’s independence long ago. I’ll leave it to citizens under the Royals to determine what will, work best. I’m too busy trying to save our democracy as best I can.

  8. You made me laugh out loud with your comment on yesterday's post Shammi, you conjured up a brilliantly plausible piece of art. You made me wish it really was, instead of a mere hole in the wall 😀😊

  9. I'm back, Shammy! It's been a long haul with a variety of health issues, like rheumatoid arthritis, messed up discs in the back, and then a major heart attack. But I'm recovering and should be back to as "normal" as possible in the future. I will need some more stents in my heart but we're waiting until I do a nuclear stress test in a week or so.

Collecting can be fun. It can also be overwhelming and take over one's good sense. :) I'm not sure what a "royalist" is, but I like the notion of royalty and I'm one of the few who think our "revolutionary" war was unnecessary. Again, it was the elitists and the rich who sponsored it but the poor who fought it.

And now the US is in such a dire situation, I'm not sure we can keep it all together. There is very little difference between Trump and his followers than Hitler and his cohorts in 1930s Germany. Independence and democracy are very fragile concepts, easily discarded and easily abused.

    Hang in there!
