Mourning Dove

A group of mourning doves have decided that my deck is the ideal sunny place to spend the day. There were eight of them out there yesterday, snoozing in the sun on my patio table and chairs.
It's very nice to think that they have chosen to visit me, but they do tend to leave their messy little calling cards behind, so I really don't want to encourage them. Apparently, they are a game bird and are edible.... so they better watch out!

  1. I love doves. We have a bunch of them who visit our bird table each day. They are supposed to be the bird of peace, but strangers are ruthlessly attacked and driven away.

    Great photo!

  3. I was going to ask if they picked up after themselves, but you answered that.

  4. We also have some come to our yard everyday but they stay in the yard. Your picture is so good – it is a real close-up.

  8. We had a lot of doves at our last home. They definitely leave their "Calling Cards" everywhere.
Nice photos of the gentle birds.

  10. Nice photo.

As Hilary said, not the sharpest knives in the bird drawer. I grew up in the city, more used to pigeons. Pigeons, despite whatever else some folks say about them, are very quick and intelligent birds. Then we moved to the suburb of Watertown. Almost no pigeons, but many mourning doves. And, compared to pigeons, they are absolutely thick as a brick. I could probably grab a couple for my dinner every night if I was starving.
