On the Chopping Block?

Not far away from my house stands this beautiful and elegant tree, an American Elm, ulmus americana. It's age is estimated to be around 200 years old, which makes it the largest and oldest tree in the area. This tree was just a tiny seedling when Queen Victoria was born in 1819.

The tree is 40 metres tall, has a canopy of 40 metres, and a 4 metre trunk circumference.

It is situated on a piece of land that is to be the site of a new expanded GO Station.... that's the public transit buses and trains that will take commuters to the city.  Metrolinx, who will build the station, planned to chop the tree, but the local paper says that there are negotiations going on to save the tree.
Yes we need public transportation, but we need the tree too. Surely we can have both?

  1. There's so few of them. The ones that have survived should be left alone.

    1. So many trees have been sacrificed in the name of progress. This one should be looked after to make sure it survives.

  3. Being an elm is a rare tree having survived the blight which killed most others. Surely they will save it!

  4. Hopefully they can work around it and keep both. You'll have to keep us updated.

  5. Oh I hope the tree can be saved. Too many things go by the wayside because of "progress".
That seems like it is a heritage tree...sad if it should go.
In response to your comment on my blog..Snicker is more "barky" now too...I think it's because her hearing is poorer and her sight too. I agree that she thinks she is still a pup but gets tired more quickly. Its sad to see these doodles getting old.

  6. If it has survived that dreaded disease, I think it deserves to live. If it is resistant to the disease, I hope that it will at least be used to parent new trees.

  7. Oh absolutely Shammi.. tie yourself to the tree if you have too 😉 such a beautiful tree it is, although if it ever falls down hopefully it won't land on the house to the side there!

  9. I believe a god resides in such an aged massive tree. It has watched over the area. Can’t it moved to the nearby place by the Metrolinx? Collect signatures of those who want to preserve the tree. Good luck!

    1. I hope it will be saved. It would be criminal to cut it down after so many years. I think it would be too large to move. The roots would spread out even further than the branches.
