I was at the local supermarket and noticed a young man picking up 4 of these alien looking fruits, so I accosted him (I don't make a habit of addressing strange men in the grocery store but he didn't mind) and asked what they were and what he was going to do with them.
He told me Dragon Fruit...... these were imported from Vietnam according to the label. Just slice in half and scoop the innards out with a spoon. So of course, I had to buy one, just to experience the taste.
It's supposed to taste like a combination of pear, kiwi and watermelon. I'll let you know.
...you are fortunate to live in Canada, the tariff on a Vietnam product would be insane here!
ReplyDeleteI've wondered how that fruit might taste. It looks very friendly on the inside.
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful looking fruit. I have seen dragon fruit occasionally but have never tried it. Next time, maybe.
ReplyDeleteThe only time I tasted Dragon Fruit was many years ago when I was in Uzbekistan. I remember it being a delightful flavor.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your sweet comment on my blog today. It is so appreciated.

Hope your's tastes dandy. I was curious and grabbed one from the grocery store, from another country for about $3.50. I googled what to do with it. I sliced it and the peeling pulled off easily by hand. But, uh, it tasted to me like a very bland strawberry and fressh cut grass. Not that I've eaten grass, but the scent seemed to be, and taste like that. Don't need to buy anymore to experiment. Unless I purchased a bad version. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI think that dragon fruit look better than they taste. The ones I have tried have all been on the bland side.
ReplyDeleteLooks good, I'd like to try it.
ReplyDeleteI've had cubed or melon balled dragon fruit flesh as a garnish at Asian restaurants, but I've never just bought one from a grocery store to eat it. You've given me that idea now!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly doesn't look like something edible. But I will take your word for it. Yikes.
ReplyDeleteDeliciously beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThe outside don't show the inside ;)
ReplyDeleteFor Christmas I use to do a tropical fruit salad with this dragon fruit...
Have a shinny day !

I don't think I have had dragon fruit since I was last in Thailand - and that's a few years ago!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the comments. The dragon fruit doesn't have a strong tase, but I really liked it. I'll eat the second half today.
ReplyDeleteI think they look better than they taste. They are about $4 a piece here. They don't have much taste but that's better than having a bad taste I guess.
ReplyDeleteI've eaten these but never bought one. I see they are imported from Vietnam so no tariff nonsense either. Great idea.
ReplyDeleteI have never tried one. I will now!
ReplyDeleteAren't you adventurous!
