Do people still collect stamps? Perhaps philately is a thing of the past, now that email and social media are the modern means of communication.
I had a stamp album with lots of stamps when I was a child, but it's long gone now. But I still can't throw mail away with a stamp on it, so the stamps get packed into an envelope in the junk drawer. One of the local churches was asking for collections of used stamps, so I decided to find the scissors and clean up my collection.
And here's the pile of bits that were removed around the stamps. Lots more room in the junk drawer now.
That is very funny. I have never collected stamps, but as for the junk drawer thing ... one in every room. When our daughter was working in Africa, pre easy email, we got letters with exotic stamps. Our local school collected, so they went there.
ReplyDeleteI would have thought stamp collecting was a thing of the past, but when I went to a new doctor's appointment recently there was a stamp shop just down the strip mall from the medical office.
ReplyDeleteI collected stamps when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteIn the past, we've donated them too. They're special and a bit rare now.
ReplyDeleteIt is great to pass on the collection for others to explore too.
ReplyDeleteThis is a dying hobby!
ReplyDeleteLike a lot of people, I had a stamp collection as a kid too. I can't imagine too many kids bother with such a low-tech hobby anymore.
ReplyDeleteGood stamps. My dad collected stamps when he was younger in the 50s and 60s. I don't know what happened to them though.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger I collected stamps and then went for years without interest in them. Now, I am always happy to obtain stamps commemorating wildlife or other aspect of nature, especially unused stamps.
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather collected stamps, something we didn't know until my parents died and we were sorting their attic. He had so many! They were from prior to 1940, I think. Someone in the family has them now.
ReplyDeleteI tried to get interested in stamps as a child, since we got so much mail from England, but soon gave it up. I collected pretty boxes and bits of broken colored glass instead!
I did collect stamps many many years ago but not any longer. I'm sure there must be a few collectors out there. I just ordered some stamps from the post office and they arrived in a single sheet instead of the usual narrow strip. I must have chosen a stamp design that is collectable.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing it's not nearly as popular as it used to be. My Mom had a small collection. When she passed, we got them appraised. Turns out they were worth next to nothing, probably because of low demand.
