I don't know what the creature is either. He sure has an interesting design on him. It almost looks Indian. Hope he keeps his "mitts" off your tomatoes!
Careful - He may be a Stink Bug. No problem, as long as you don't disturb him or make him think you're attacking. And, if it IS a Stink Bug, under no circumstances step on him or swat him. P-U!
