The Marmite Crisis

You either love it or you hate it. Me? I love it!

It's Marmite. The very British gooey smelly dark brown spread made from brewer's yeast, and various other yummy not-so-secret ingredients, such as folic acid, niacin, vitamin B12, riboflavin, and salt.... mmm... all my favourites!

My very best get-up-and-go breakfast.... a couple of slices of buttered toast with a thin scraping of Marmite, washed down with a hot cup of tea. Perfect cut into soldiers dipped in a boiled egg.

But sadly, my Marmite supply is running dangerously low. I've tried Metro, Foodland, No Frills, Longos, Supercentre, and come up with nothing. "We haven't had that for months" they tell me.

I think I'm about to have a Marmite meltdown.

Just when we all thought 2020 couldn't get any worse, there's a worldwide Marmite shortage! That nasty bug Covid 19 has a lot to answer for, not least the fact that there's a very short supply of brewer's yeast available, the main ingredient, because the pubs were shut for so long during the UK lockdown, and nobody was drinking beer.... well, not in pubs anyway.

I had plenty of toilet paper, masks, sanitiser, things to do and books to read, all ready to brave the lockdown, but why oh why didn't I stock up with Marmite?

  1. I feel for you. No marmite here, but we do have both Promite and Vegemite - both are household staples. I prefer Promite, he prefers Vegemite but we have both. I will check our stores to see if the shortage is here as well.

    1. An update: I went to our grocery store and picked up a small Marmite - all they had. My email address is in my profile and if you send me an email with your address I am happy to send it to you.

    2. What a generous offer! You are a Marmite angel, thank you so much. I'll certainly let you know if/when I become desperate. I haven't heard of Promite but I certainly tasted Vegemite when I was in Australia.

    3. I bought it for you - and would be very happy to send it. I noticed that it is made in New Zealand.

  2. I'm a Vegemite fan myself, find Marmite too strong LOL
There have been a few things go missing from our supermarket shelves because they can no longer be imported, but on the whole I have been able to find suitable substitutes. I hope you manage to track down a supply of Marmite soon :)

    1. You have to be tough to take Marmite! LOL
I have put the word out to the family..... look out for Marmite on your weekly shopping excursions. It's gotta be out there somewhere!

    1. It's a love it or hate it thing, no inbetween opinions. I've just discovered a potato bread at the local supermarket. Toasted with butter and Marmite.... divine!

  4. Like caviar and lutefisk , I guess it is an acquired taste. Hope you find some. I am not responsible for the shortage

    1. I didn't have it when I was growing up, it wasn't on mum's shopping list. I discovered it as a teenager and have eaten my way through quite a few jars since then.

  6. I never had it. Hope you get lucky in finding a jar or two or maybe three. :)

  7. I don't like it. One person in the more extended family likes it, but he has chosen to exit the extended family. Serves him right. ;)

  8. I think your Marmite might be a little like our Vegemite Shammi, the description you gave of your favourite breakfast is exactly the perfect way to have Vegemite also. I agree, as long as it's spread thin it is delicious. I hope that empty spot in your pantry is filled soon 😉

    1. Yes, I had Vegemite in Australia, much the same recipe as Marmite in my opinion, but of course I have to say Marmite is better as it's a traditional bone of contention between me and my Australian friend here in Canada!

  9. As for Marmite, and Vegemite too, it is a plot to dull the tastebuds of all who dare try them. I have sampled both, in their native lands, and they should be kept there!!

  10. So sorry, but I have never had it and have to admit it doesn't sound like something I will be looking for.
Yeast is difficult to get here too. Everyone was baking bread and pastries at the beginning of the lockdown..now things have come back on the shelves a bit.
I am so tired of COVID and what it's done to 2020.

  11. None in Canada, I’ve tried everywhere. Not even Vegemite. There are many stores that sell English goods, but no luck.
I’m pretty certain that there is something about this mentioned in Revelations.
